I need to correct myself there. I just attempted to run Acqlite on a system that only had Java 1.7 running & an error message appears asking for Java 1.5 or higher.
ie: you, just like my other system obviously have Apple's Java 1.6 also installed. Apple's Java 1.6 can coincide with any later version of Oracle's Java.

My first advice about upgrading OSX is still valid.

I considered OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard to be like the Windows XP. And 10.7 to be like VISTA. Experienced Windows users would understand that comparison.

I do greatly suspect your problems might vanish after an OSX upgrade to anything higher than 10.7

I'm not seeing the same issue. Java @0.2-0.5% CPU, 124 MB RAM, and Acqlite @0.6% CPU, 20 MB RAM.
Java 1.7.0_55 & OSX 10.8.5 ... obviously I haven't tried Java 1.8 yet.
Running on MacPro 2008, 3.2 GHz, 16 GB RAM.

What I can say is that OSX 10.7 was somewhat buggy with memory & resources even for several of Mac's own apps. Research will verify this. These bugs were not fixed until 10.8. It might be worthy to upgrade to 10.8 or higher.
