QARecord 0.5.0 release

QARecord is a simple but solid recording tool. It works well
with stereo and multichannel recordings, supporting ALSA and JACK interfaces and in both 16 bit and 32 bit mode. By using a large ringbuffer for
the captured data, buffer overruns are avoided. It has a Qt based GUI with graphical peak meters.

Alsa Modular Synthesizer 1.8.8 RC1

1. intro

In 2007 Karsten Wiese and Malte Steiner resurrected the AMS project to continue development.
Now we proudly present the first release since 2004, the version 1.8.8 RC1. Everything runs fine on our computers but we would like AMS users to try this version and to report, maybe on the ams-user mailing list or bug tracker at sourceforge, when something is broken or patches sound suddenly different.

2. what's new

- bug fixes and code optimizations improve the performance a bit.
- clones of modules vco and noise (called vco2 and noise2) which only output one signal instead of calculating all waveforms or types of noise. Saves some cpucycles and in the majority of my patches I at least only need one waveform per oscillator.
- right click in empty space brings up a list of modules instead of color configuration which is now in the menu.
- change of the scope, the timing/gain faders are now below the display instead of a separate tab, making it easier to adjust the scope.
- exclusion of the spectrometer which seems not to work at the moment. Its replaced by a dummy so patches should be compatible. We will examine the issues later.
- fix a crash when sequencer with 12 steps is chosen.
- fix a crash when loading a patch.

3. AMS still not features Autotools or similar generators to ease the compiling. So the first step besides the installation of the requirements (see below) is to edit the Makefile, so it is optimized for your architecture. You are in luck when using an AMD64 with 64Studio or Debian because this is the current setting of the Makefile and should build out of the box. Other users need to change at least the architecture settings reflected in the options -march, -mtune and -m . Feel free to ask on the AMS mailinglist for support.

The requirements on above platforms are
- QT3 lib and the libqt3-compat compatibility headers and devtools
- libclalsadrv-dev, the Alsa library
- libjack-dev, the Jack library

but I might forgot additional ones. On other platforms the libs/packages might be named differently. There is an ams.pro file now.
You can run
$ qmake
to roll your own Makefile.
This works fine at least on fc6/i386.
You may have to tweak that Makefile's CXX_FLAGS to honour your cpu's
features (see above).

4. Future
The next version 1.8.9 (maybe we even call it 1.9) will be a huge step internally, lifting AMS to QT4 and get rid of QT legacy and compatibility libs. Improvements particularly regarding the graphical user interface code could then be made. Better make tools going to be included to ease the compilation.
