versions 1.8.0 or 1.9.11 with the Sun 5.0 C++ compiler.
I have looked through all the bugs and reports trying
to apply that information but still have not been able
to build cppunit.

I have attached a zip of my 1.9.11 config output, build
output for cppunit and an attempt to build an app using
cppunit (because the previous step does generate a .so
although not a good one).

Any insight or new ideas to try would be appreciated.
