Unfortunately, after almost 20 years, I have to officially stop releasing new versions of Devil-Linux. I simply do not have the time anymore to do this properly. This is in addition to GRSecurity not being available anymore to the general public, which was the core of our security features. It has been a blast maintaining this distro and we had a lot of long-term followers, for which I am very grateful. All current downloads and the sources will of course stay on the websites. If anybody wants to pick up where I left off, please feel free to reach out so that we can transfer all the responsibilities. -- Regards Heiko Zuerker |

Bruce, Yes it was no easy decision, but I finally just had to admit it to myself. Many thanks to you too. Without your help DL would never have gotten this far. Hi Heiko, first of all many many Thanks for all your effort and support ! It's really sad to hear that you have to stop to maintain DL, which we run since more than 15 years now on our fw and vpn. I hate the idea of having to change our setup, it was one of our most reliable and easy to run systems over all these years :-( However, times move on and I fully understand that at some point time gets an issue. It seems that we'll have to start looking for an alternative. Until now I didn't even bother about alternatives, since there was simply no need for such, never... Is there something that you or someone on this list can recommend? I mainly "need" the CD/DVD (system) + USB (config) combination including shorewall, dhcrelay, openvpn, rsyslog Thanks again Dietmar 2018-01-07 17:41 GMT+01:00 Heiko Zuerker <he...@zu...>: > Bruce, > > Yes it was no easy decision, but I finally just had to admit it to myself. > > Many thanks to you too. After retiring from corporate IT a few years ago, I haven't had a need for a fancy firewall or VPN. My wireless router does the job for my home network. However, if I did have the need I would probably build my own from a regular Linux distro. I'd also look closely at OpenBSD (if they are still active) to use instead of Linux since they are one of the few distro's I'm aware of that focuses on security. Another upside is there aren't as many vulnerabilities for BSD systems since they're not as popular. The downside is I'm not that familiar with BSD. And of course, there are always the commercial options for corporate networks. Cisco ASA, etc. - BS On Mon, Jan 8, 2018 at 7:54 AM, Heiko Zuerker <he...@zu...> wrote: > Dietmar, > > I have not found an alternative yet for myself either, but have to admit I > haven't looked very hard either. > > On Mon, Jan 8, 2018 at 6:18 AM, Dietmar Rieder <die...@gm...> > wrote: > >> Hi Heiko, >> >> first of all many many Thanks for all your effort and support ! >> >> It's really sad to hear that you have to stop to maintain DL, which we >> run since more than 15 years now on our fw and vpn. >> I hate the idea of having to change our setup, it was one of our most >> reliable and easy to run systems over all these years :-( >> However, times move on and I fully understand that at some point time >> gets an issue. >> >> It seems that we'll have to start looking for an alternative. >> Until now I didn't even bother about alternatives, since there was simply >> no need for such, never... >> Is there something that you or someone on this list can recommend? >> I mainly "need" the CD/DVD (system) + USB (config) combination including >> shorewall, dhcrelay, openvpn, rsyslog >> >> Thanks again >> Dietmar >> >> 2018-01-07 17:41 GMT+01:00 Heiko Zuerker <he...@zu...>: >> >>> Bruce, >>> >>> Yes it was no easy decision, but I finally just had to admit it to >>> myself. >>> >>> Many thanks to you too. Hi Bruce, thanks for your suggestion. I was considering to "build" may own distro, however IT is not to main focus in my job, so time is also an issue for me. BSD would be good however I'd prefer use the tools that I'm more familiar with and I don't need to invest to much of my time. Interestingly, many years ago, we switched from BSD to DL :-) I'll have a look at AlpineLinux as suggested by Roland, seems to be a good alternative. Hi, I'm also very sorry to see DL go :-( But I understand the dilemma. I too don't have the time any more to set up my fw from scratch (build own iso, etc), I need something that works out of the box (but still allows me to customize everything if needed). I've started to look around for a replacement and found Alpine Linux. It can also be run in a stateless mode with configuration on a writeable medium: https://wiki.alpinelinux.org/wiki/Installation I haven't been able to try it out yet, but it looks at least promising. Thanks to everyone and Heiko especially! Hi folks, The Alpine documentation mentions doing customization by using writable storage, as distinct from the loopback device. I confess it has been a long time since I used Devil, although I will be installing it up again tonight. I do remember Devil was specifically designed to allow you to customize the CD, so you don't need any separate media. To me this is far more elegant. How much effort is required to maintain DL? I certainly am not asking to step in now, but I will with it and may later post updates. I absolutely love the elegance. I'm now again highly interested in security. Many years ago, I enhanced a firewall program, and put it on my DL cd. Yes, Again, Thanks to everyone and Heiko especially!
