This is documented in info version:&lt;/p&gt;

Regardless, providing zip archives in addition to tarballs isn't much of a burden, and if it helps users, why not.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;zip instead of tarballs is not a good idea, because gzip and tar are bog-standard tools on Unix-ish systems, while zip is not.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I'll leave this feature request open as a reminder until the next release.&lt;/p&gt;
