Geomajas already was a all-Java, modular, enterprise framework based upon Spring. The biggest improvements occured in the plug-in system. Plug-ins are now automatically registered, allowing extensions and overwriting base services. Plug-ins register their dependencies and Geomajas checks at startup whether the dependent modules are available and compatible. The plug-ins now have an independent release cycle to allow improvements to be easily released.

The release includes the following improvements:

general
- API contract check is now done automatically
- assure only free sample data is used
- include license info in all jars, assure all modules also have source and javadoc on deploy
- improved documentation (and split-up per plug-in)
- snapshot builds are now available from http://apps.geomajas.org/nexus/content/groups/latest/
- assure copyright/license information for dependencies is included
- more : http://jira.geomajas.org/secure/ReleaseNote.jspa?projectId=10000&version=10213

backend 1.7.1
- provide mechanism for plug-ins to contribute to the Geomajas context and provide information about themselves and the dependencies
- upgrade to GeoTools 2.6.3 and some other libaries to more recent versions
- allow pipelines to be extended
- allow all scale related configuration options to us 1:x notation
- allow EPSG codes to be added
- provide dispatcher servlet, a mechanism to add servlet endpoints through spring configuration
- more : http://jira.geomajas.org/secure/ReleaseNote.jspa?projectId=10219&version=10335

GWT face 1.7.1
- possibility to have a default or fallback controller on the map
- scroll zoom now considers mouse position
- introduction of a abstract CircleController
- add a zoom to rectangle option to the map's navigation addon
- add double click possibility to the pan controller, so that it is able to zoom in by double clicking
- improvements in GWT archetype

Geomajas has been totally transformed into a modular, enterprise framework, based upon Spring. The most important changes are:

Modular Architecture

The Geomajas framework is now fully modular with a clear definition of a public API and extension points. This improves the overall system design and increases clarity and consistency. A lot of attention was given to assuring separation of concerns and break-up in clear responsibilities.

The modular architecture also benefits extensibility because it allows for easy creation of additional modules and plug-ins.

The public API describes both the supported/stable API as well as an experimental API. The latter allows the Geomajas community to peak ahead and give early feedback on future API extensions.

GWT face: Google Web Toolkit for the Client Side

In addition to the dojo face, a GWT face has been added. This allows engineers to develop, test and debug applications in a single programming environment (Java).

It also helps in establishing cross-browser compatibility, as GWT solves many of the differences in browser behaviour.
Users have access to a very extensive GWT showcase, samples and documentation.

Advanced Security

The new Geomajas security allows users to configure and apply access and restrictions on a fine grained level. Geomajas now supports both functional constraints (commands, tools) as well as data constraints (layers, geographical extent, features, attributes). Authentication and authorisation can be administered through multiple external services.

System Configuration using Spring

Leveraging an industry standard technology, the Spring Framework, the overall flexibility and extensibility is substantially improved. Users can configure many aspects of the system, including client and server side features, transaction management and security.

Services for Rendering and Feature Handling

Geomajas now features state-of-the-art process configuration and extensibility thanks to the introduction of configurable pipelines and services for rendering and feature handling. This also enables the introduction of caching, additional rendering steps, spatial manipulation and analysis, etc.

Technical Documentation

As part of a well defined API, extensive javadoc and a user guide (120+ pages) are provided. The latter covers amongst others the architecture, configuration guidelines, information on faces and explains how to extend Geomajas.

Geomajas 1.5.3 community preview released

The Geomajas project is proud to release Geomajas 1.5.3, a technology preview showcasing the progress we are making towards our next stable build.

The major advances in this version include:

* Addition of a configurable security. Rights can be configured on layer level, feature level, attribute level, command level and even toolbar level.
* Spring configuration has been split up into a general server-side configuration and a clien-side configuration.
* Stabilization of the server-side API and introduction of an experimental API.
* Numerous bugfixes (78 in total)

If all goes well, the new website should arrive within 2 weeks from now. But that is not all. A new server has been provided by GeoSparc, to store the subversion repository, the Jira issue tracker, the maven repository, a Tomcat with the latest geomajas samples etc.

We should have the server fully operational at roughly the same time as the new website, so we're pretty excited. When the new website arrives, you will notice a few changes in the direction that we're taking geomajas.
Finally the long awaited version 1.3.0 of Geomajas is ready and available for download. The main focus for this version was internationalization and speed. To this end there are serverside coordinate transformations, there is a new tile-based caching system, there is OpenStreetMap compatibility, a complex attribute model (1 to n, m to n, inheritance), and lots lots more.

One last issue i would like to address are the new online samples. They have received a little overhaul, and we now have a small "taste of things to come" sample added, that shows some of the more imaginative possibilities of the usage of Dojo widgets in combination with our own widgets.
