This release is one of the largest undertakings of the project, since it was formed in 2007, after splitting from its parent CMS, XOOPS. In addition to rewriting all the code to be compatible with PHP 5.3, the developers have restructured the entire framework of this popular content management system. The result is a smaller, faster and better platform for your web projects.

This release is not the only significant accomplishment for this team
\* In 2009, ImpressCMS won The Most Promising Open Source PHP CMS in the Packt Publishing annual survey, after placing 3rd in 2008
\* 2008 finalist in SourceForge's Community Choice Awards

That is the slogan for ImpressCMS 1.3 and now you have the ability to put it to the test. The project developers have released an alpha view of the upcoming version - http://community.impresscms.org/modules/smartsection/item.php?itemid=522

What Should You Expect From ImpressCMS 1.3 Alpha?

\* Smaller - Once all the legacy code and duplicated code is removed, ImpressCMS will be much easier on the space required on your server, leaving more room for media files\!
\* Better - Also, the structure of the code has seen a major overhaul, in order to comply with the current best practices for PHP5. This makes the code easier to write, and easier to maintain.
\* Faster - The refactoring in the ImpressCMS 1.3 release has resulted in major improvements: less memory use, speedier page loads and less SQL queries per page, making it the fastest and nimblest ImpressCMS to date.

In addition, ImpressCMS 1.3 will run under PHP 5.3, positioning it for better implementations as web hosts begin upgrading their servers.

As an alpha release, this is not intended for live sites, but only for testing and review. The development team is looking for feedback on the performance of this version on various servers and for design feedback on the administration area, which was another focus of this release. Feedback can be done through the community forums - http://community.impresscms.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic\_id=4600&forum=55

After reviewing the alpha release, work will begin on the beta release, which will focus on final improvements to the code and bug identification.

The plugin vulnerability exposed a method for creating categories and folders for the imagemanager and bypassed the normal permissions checking. This was discovered by a member of the German community and the patch was being developed when another vulnerability was also reported by a 3rd party.

The second vulnerability required elevated permissions and access to the administrative area of ImpressCMS. Nonetheless, we felt it important to patch this vulnerability.

Downloads are immediately available in our file repository on SourceForge and include a complete install, an upgrade from older versions and an upgrade from the most recent version, ImpressCMS 1.2.3. Site administrators are strongly encouraged to upgrade their sites as soon as possible.

If you discover a questionable behavior in ImpressCMS or a potential security weakness, please contact us and allow us to address it immediately, which we will. To notfiy our security team, send a detailed email to security@impresscms.org and we will respond to your report and provide a verification and fix, if warranted.

This release candidate follows very quickly on the beta release, as there was only one reported regression during the test cycle. This regression has been resolved in this Release Candidate.

Since the initial release of ImpressCMS 1.2, PHP 5.3 support has steadily gained ground in hosting solutions. Based upon user feedback, the ImpressCMS team decided not to wait for ImpressCMS 1.3 in order to support PHP 5.3 officially.

This release is a Release Candidate, meaning it is meant for testing purposes. It is not for use on a live site\!

What's New in ImpressCMS 1.2.3 ?

\* The most important change is official PHP5.3 compliance for the core modules and libraries. Note that modules might need adaptations to work in PHP 5.3. That is beyond the control of the core team.
\* Fixed: search pagination and page title
\* Improved: session security for the installation process
\* Improved: migration of images in the imagemanager during an upgrade from ImpressCMS 1.1
\* Improved: use of smarty variables
\* Fixed : search functionality issues
\* Security : possible SQL injection vulnerability
\* Fixed regression in the icmsForm class

A more detailed overview is available in our Trac release notes for ImpressCMS 1.2.3.

This version patches a recently discovered vulnerability in an external library, CSSTidy. The file containing the vulnerability is not used by ImpressCMS, and can be safely removed.

Fixing the vulnerability

Via Automatic Upgrade:

Upgrading to ImpressCMS 1.2.2 will take care of removing that file. The latest release package \(1.2.2\) does not contain the vulnerable file anymore.

Via Manual Procedure:

In case you have made changes to your local installation that make it difficult to do an upgrade, please remove the vulnerable file manually. The file to remove is plugins/csstidy/css\_optimiser.php

Where do I get ImpressCMS 1.2.2?

You can download the latest release from our file release system on SourceForge \(http://sourceforge.net/projects/impresscms/files/\). The download packages allows you to either do a fresh installation, or upgrade from an earlier version of ImpressCMS or XOOPS.
