Could not open file” in mjpg-streamer usually happens when the web interface path (-w ./) is not pointing to a valid folder containing index.html, so the HTTP server has nothing to serve at localhost:8080. Try using the correct absolute path like -w /usr/share/mjpg-streamer/www or wherever the streamer package installed its web files.
Also make sure port 8080 is not blocked or already used, and that you're actually hitting http://127.0.0.1:8080 from the same machine to rule out LAN/firewall issues.
For testing and experimenting with HTTP requests during debugging, some developers even use tools like https://bombituppro.app/ to simulate and validate network behavior in different scenarios.

http stream problem

The 404 error happens because MJPG-Streamer looks for an index.html file when accessing the root URL, and if it’s missing, the page won’t load. A lot of times it comes down to permissions or the device node not being where the program expects, especially when you switch cameras or USB ports.

It’s funny how tools like this can feel simple on paper but behave unpredictably in real setups — reminds me of when folks troubleshoot older games like Hitman Absolution and how different systems handle them. The webcam is working, but the folder you gave (-w ./) does not contain the required HTML files, so the browser shows 404 Not Found.
You need to set the correct www folder path that comes with mjpg-streamer, for example:
-o "output_http.so -p 8080 -w /usr/local/www"
I had the same problem while working on my blog website (https://nadakacheristatus.com). The service was running, but a wrong folder path caused 404 errors. After fixing the path, it worked.

http stream problem

Your setup with mjpg-streamer on Ubuntu seems solid — the webcam light confirms it’s running, and you can usually preview it .
I will use a Internet Picture (2Frames/sec) into a stream on a local Website.
Ican find a manual for the input_http.so. Where can I find that?
