all fonts that are to be embedded in the OpenGLEAN project. The font
support is likely to evolve, but the API is for now based on the GLUT
API, with extensions (and many new fonts). Separation of the fonts
is in part because there is no excuse for GLUT like libraries to tie
the fonts so closely to unrelated window/device/etc. APIs, and partly
to allow the fonts to develop more experimentally. As part of the
OpenGLEAN portability library suite, gleanfonts provides the same
basic fonts on every platform. gleanfonts itself is under the MIT
license, though the font data is extracted from an X server and bears
a comparably liberal license from Adobe.

See http://www.SourceForge.net/projects/openglean for overview and
http://OpenGLEAN.SourceForge.net/ for the project homepage.

Chief updates in this release:

* Adds two new typefaces (Courier and Symbol) from Adobe.

* Expands all Adobe fonts to include 8, 10, 12, 14, 18, and 24
pixel height (ascent) variants.

* Adds _BOLD variants to all but Symbol.

* Adds _ITALIC variants to all Adobe fonts (including _BOLD
variants), except for Symbol.

OpenGLEAN syncs core with satellites.

OpenGLEAN syncs core with satellites. OpenGLEAN is "a GLUT
gone lean"---but the name also suggests "gleaning" (separating the good
stuff from the chaff). OpenGLEAN is a GLUT family member, based on
OpenGLUT and freeglut, with an eye towards removing deadwood (targeted
as a 1.0 release). This positions OpenGLEAN as a portability
windowing-and-OpenGL library, suitable for new applications. Its
liberal MIT license sets it apart from many other such libraries that
are LGPLed.

This release marks a lock-step release of the various sub-project,
or satellite, libraries such that it is possible to begin using the
satelite libraries in lieu of certain core OpenGLEAN code. As the
release is for the benefit of developers, who can generally recompile
the code on their own, the only packaging currently expected is the
source tarball and the documentation for the satellites. Expect a
0.7 cycle to contain new features, with some new features to non-core
support only being available in the satellites.

OpenGLEAN 0.5 released; Beta status

OpenGLEAN shifts to Beta with the 0.5 release. OpenGLEAN is "a GLUT
http://OpenGLEAN.SourceForge.net/ for the project homepage.

This release introduces some modest enhancements to the technology,
and a significant shift in emphasis on finally exporting non-core
technologies. It is also something of a reference point in
OpenGLEAN's history as a SourceForge project. Having had
project-relative record levels of activity in almost all categories
this month, and passing 1,000 downloads (and an unknown of secondary
distributions from RPM servers, etc.), as well as beginning the
process of creating satellite libraries, it seems time to move this
project into Beta status.

OpenGLEAN releases gleanshapes 0.1

OpenGLEAN has just been released gleanshapes 0.1. This marks the first
portion of the GLUT API to be preserved in an external library. The
release is partly to work out kinks in the release infrastructure
after setting up the new sub-project.

gleanshapes has started using the SourceForge CVS server, so it may
be examined via anoncvs. The expectation is to create a handful of
narrowly focused libraries that preserve OpenGLEAN's fairly complete
GLUT compatibility. However, as the GNU auto* tools used embed
about 1MB of files (uncompressed), it is possible that a single
"gleanglut" library will be used to house all separable GLUT
compatibility routines that OpenGLEAN removes.

The redbook examples are drawn from the classic OpenGL programming guide published by Adison-Weseley. OpenGLEAN is an attempt to glean the glutted GLUT API (or a"GLUT gone lean"). It is based on freeglut and OpenGLUT, and has the liberal MIT license.

See http://www.SourceForge.net/projects/openglean for an overview, and http://OpenGLEAN.SourceForge.net/ for the project homepage.

The changes are mostly to remove some cruft and provide a pre-built -doc archive with PDF & LaTeX output, as well as a -doc archive with newer (better, its hoped) output in general.

As the redbook examples are fairly stable, it is expected that this will be unchanged until OpenGLEAN 1.0 is cut. If you already have the 0.9.1 OpenGLEAN versions of the redbook examples, and mostly just want the raw C source code, there is no need to upgrade to 0.9.2. But if you don't have 0.9.1, or want improved documentation, then you will should consider getting this update.

OpenGLEAN 0.4.3 released.

OpenGLEAN 0.4.3 has just been released. It provides a GLUT-like API, the chief feature of which is creating and managing windows with an OpenGL rendering context---and doing so with an API that is not bound to a particular window system.

A mixed blessing of the GLUT API is that every function always succeeds (or dies trying). This lets programmers ignore error handling, but prevents programmers from gracefully handling failures.

This new OpenGLEAN proposal outlines a way to extend the API to enable graceful failure without forcing error-handling on those legitimate cases that do not want to handle errors.

OpenGLEAN 0.3 released.

OpenGLEAN 0.3 has just been released.
