Hi Martin,

I retried the compilation with cvs-checkout ot this evening on=20
another machine. I get the same problem.

Can you re-run ./post_configure in root of the source tree and send me the

Problem is that the .ts files are not automatically compiled to .qm when 
building - so .ts file was right, byt qm was the old one probably. I have 
fixed that, so when running qmake in the src/gui directory, all existing 
.ts files in lang/ subdirectory are compiled to corresponding .qm files in 
the process.

Current version seems to be ok. I have just tried to build all
localization files and German looks good to me. 
Which words are not translated for you?

When did you checked out? I think that Martin has updated the file and
removed <translation type="unfinished"></translation> type attribute. I am not
sure but "unfinished" attribute may block the translation for the
source.

when I started pdfedit out of the directory where I had compiled it, I 
remembered that there was no german gui-translation.
I looked into the directory with the ts-files. There I found my german 
translation. In the pdfedit.pro-file I see the line with "Translation ...". 
There is at the end an entry for the german-translation-file.
When I compiled the language-file by hand the gui shows not all translated 
strings (only about 20%).
Is there a problem with the version from the cvs-checkout?

Hi all,

today I checked the cvs out and tried to compile and install pdfedit. The 
configure-script runs well. Also I get no problems with make.
But when I try to install the compiled source on my OpenSuSE 10.2-i686-box 
with checkinstall (rpm-builder) I run into an error:

Problem is that the file open dialog return name of the file in
unicode (with any non-ascii characters that may be there), while the
core expect const char* (8bit ) when opening the file. Probably the
name got converted in a bad way (as ascii and not in the local
codepage)

I personally usually tend to avoid non-ascii filenames, because of
similar problems in most applications, so I have not noticed this bug
:)

However, the fix should be relatively simple - add proper conversion
to appropriate places.

I added the conversion and I was able to open files with accented
characters in it, so this should be fixed now.

The fix is now in CVS, so release 0.3.1 will be fixed once it will
come out. You can test the CVS version in meantime.

I followed your instructions. When I now start pdfedit from the=20
local directory I don't see any efford. I think there must be an=20
error in the structure of my translated file. Should I sent it to=20
you directly, so that you are able to have a look inside the file?

Yeas, use a "patch" program (see "man patch" for syntax), paste that diff 
I sent you into file called "bugfix.patch" (or take the one I'm sending in 
attachment), copy the file into root of the source code tree and type:

patch -p0 <bugfix.patch

Should patch the file for you automatically (but you can skip it if you 
have already patched it manually).

As to the bug - the wrong configure may already have created the bad 
makefiles using qt4, so in the root of the source code tree do:

cd src/qsa && make distclean

This will wipe out all the makefiles and project files and any temoporary 
files created by bad configure script. Next time you try to build pdfedit, 
it should work fine (as the files will be rebuilt right this time).

I see the problem is that QSA is using bad qmake (QMAKE variable was not 
inherited when child qmakes were run, thus in middle of the process, qmake 
from QT4 was run)

It was fixed in CVS.
You can apply this quickfix, it should solve the problem

BTW it should be "export PATH=$QTDIR/bin:$PATH" to be correct.
Also, from 0.3.0 with that configutils fix above setting PATH should not 
be necessary (if you have QTDIR set right, the configuration script will 
figure out what qmake to use)

Seems like include paths are not QT specific
(-I/usr/share/qt/mkspecs/default -I. -I/usr/include/QtCore

xpdf always uses -O2. Rest of the code use -O2 and no debug info if
configure is run with "--enable-release" and "-O0 -g" if without this
switch. I'll change the default to be "enable-release" and -O2 after
some testing (in 0.3.1 or 0.3.2 or so ... :)

Lot more warnings are emitted with --enable-release, so that is also a
reason why it is not enabled by default :)

There is reason why these are read-only/hidden, since editing them is
likely only to damage the PDF and they are hidden because they may be
confusing. Although the readonly tooltip may say about ability to to
turn the read-only off or maybe add some option to do it just for
current property (and probably same for hidden ...). I'll look at it
and maybe it will be changed somewhat ...

Thanks for the link! Indeed I can insert new text now with accented 
characters. However I have to replace an existing text, and then this 
trick doesn't work. I guess I'll have to wait for the 'clean 
implementation'.

If you wonder why I need to replace a text, I'm trying to make some sort 
of mail merge script. So I have to replace a string like {name} with a 
real-life name (with possibly accented characters in it).

The problem is in PDF charset specification, where normal char has size of =
1 byte and you can not map all accented and special characters into 256+- c=
haracters. Unicode is not yet fully supported (e.g. adding text).

I have implemented scrolling of the page by keys 
(left/right/up/down/pgup/pgdn/home/end)

Note that the page view need to have focus for this to work (as these keys 
may be used to browse items in the treeview, etc ...), so you may need to 
click once in the page if the focus is elsewhere, like on the commandline 
or in object tree :)

The code for this is now in CVS and you can expect new release (with many 
other bugfixes and some speedup :) in about 2 days or so ...

When I try to add a special character (e.g. é) to a text inside a PDF it 
is not displayed correcly. The special character is correctly displayed 
in the 'Parameter 1' field of the GUI, but in the PDF the character is 
displayed wrong, like there is a character set mismatch. When I change 
the character encoding in the options the displayed text changes but 
never becomes correct.

Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Never mind, I now know that findText is only available in GUI mode, and 
that there's a reason for that.
