&lt;p&gt;We needed PDV to support tarballs that were packed with&lt;br /&gt;
gzip. Under Linux you are very likely to find gzip&lt;br /&gt;
installed but not necessarily compress. Thus a&lt;br /&gt;
compressed tarball might fail unpacking. I attached a&lt;br /&gt;
modified version of PDV which supports unpacking of&lt;br /&gt;
gzip'ed tarballs.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It's not a patch, but the changed source tree. Sorry&lt;br /&gt;
