A new release of the refbase package is available at:

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/refbase/refbase-0.9.6.tar.gz?download

This release offers significant bug fixes and all users are encourage to upgrade. Most changes preserve or slightly improve the interface and are to keep refbase current with modern standards. We've replace functions that were deprecated in php 5.3, updated the RIS import and export to the current specification, improved handling of Endnote, DOI (particularly from PubMed), and CrossRef imports. We've improved localization and have added Russian and Japanese localizations.

An overview of the main features of this package can be found at:

http://features.refbase.net/

A new release of the refbase package is available at:

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/refbase/refbase-0.9.5.tar.gz?download

This release offers major function enhancements and bug fixes. refbase-0.9.5 sports a refined interface, offers a query history and search suggestions, and supports more record types as well as searching for duplicates.

In addition, it can now import from SciFinder and Endnote XML as well as from ArXiv ID or DOI. refbase-0.9.5 also supports additional export formats (ADS, Atom XML, ISI Web of Science, Simple Dublin Core XML, Word 2007 XML Bibliography) and citation styles (AMA, APA, Chicago, Harvard, MLA, Vancouver), and allows to dynamically include results from a refbase server into foreign web pages.

This release also adds support for OpenSearch which allows users of OpenSearch enabled browsers to search refbase directly from their browser's toolbar.

This release offers major function enhancements and bugfixes. Batch import from various bibliographic formats (including BibTeX, Endnote, RIS, ISI and MODS XML) is now supported, as is import from a PubMed ID. An OpenDocument Spreadsheet for use with OpenOffice.org can be exported and formatted citation lists can be generated as HTML, RTF, PDF, or LaTeX. A SRU/W service as well as support for unAPI, OpenURL and COinS metadata have been added. These allow the data to be used by the next generation of bibliographic clients. A new command line client is also included.

- save and recall search queries
- add records to user-specific groups
- RSS support
- print view
- Unicode support
- user-specific permissions
- an Endnote style file and PHP script to ease the manual batch import of bibliographic records

Please see the readme file (that comes with the package) for a quick overview about what's there, what has changed, what's still missing and how to setup your database. The readme is also available online at:

We plan to use the "Metadata Object Description Schema" (MODS) as this common format, a XML based schema which is currently developed by the Library of Congress and that will be also supported by other projects like the OpenOffice bibliographic project:

http://www.loc.gov/standards/mods/

The adoption of a standard exchange format should enable users to easily exchange bibliographic data between different database applications. Additionally, this standard format will reduce the task of developing special import filters and reference formatting styles since they will be inter-changable between database applications.

In order to align the development of bibliographic databases for the web we created a separate sourceforge project:

http://bibliophile.sourceforge.net/

The Bibliophile project aims to promote standards, discussion among users on necessary features and a variety of specific solutions for different fields of research.

refbase 0.7 available

refbase is a web-based solution for managing scientific literature, references and citations. A new beta release of the refbase package is available at the files section:

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=64647

This beta release incorporates the following main fixes and enhancements:

- circumvents a very stupid bug where it wasn't possible to setup
the very first user of the database (see the readme for details!)

- a user management interface is provided to admins

- users can now change their password later on

- variable settings from 'ini.inc.php' are now honoured correctly

- provided a search form that shows up on the main page after
successful login which will allow a user to easily search his *own*
literature only (note that this functionality is still preliminary!)

Please see the online documentation as well as the readme file (that comes with the package) for a quick overview about what's there, what's still missing and how to setup your files & database tables. The readme is also available online at:

This status update will give you a quick overview about what's there and what's still missing.

Currently, the following features have been implemented successfully:

- search the whole database by use of different search forms

- search within results functionality

- browse found records

- view selected records in detail

- export selected records to different citation formats

- extract literature cited within a text and build an appropriate reference list

- login/logout capabilities

- user management

- add/edit/delete records (logged in users only)

The following (planned) enhancements are still missing:

- easy customization of application specific variables via one global 'ini' file

- validation of data entered by the user

- proper management of the user specific fields 'marked', 'user_keys' & 'user_notes'

- availability of additional citation formats on export

- ability to save any records or queries for easy later retrieval

- (batch) import of full ASFA records

- 'copy citation to clipboard' functionality

Known issues:

- currently, the simple and advanced search forms employ lots of dynamic popup menus to ease user entry of data. This works well for small databases (<10.000 records) but causes significant speed problems for larger databases!

This is a short introduction to "refbase", an
initiative that originated at the Institute for
Polar Ecology (Kiel University, Germany)

http://www.uni-kiel.de/ipoe/

At our institute, we felt the need to develop a web-based solution
for managing scientific literature, references and citations.
Aims are to develop a web-based, platform-independent,
multi-user application for literature databases based on php
and mysql.

An implementation that aims to provide a comprehensive and
platform-independent literature resource for scientists working
in the field of polar & marine sciences can be reviewed at:

http://polaris.ipoe.uni-kiel.de/refs/

It's a preliminary version (that still lacks lots of features,
e.g., user management, adding/editing of records etc.). However,
among the goals of this project is to adhere to web standards
(i.e. produce standards compliant html code), avoid cookies (if
possible) and make only sparse use of stuff like javascript - in
short: keep things simple and accessible.

The database application aims to offer:

- a clean & standardized interface
- a multitude of search options, including both, simple &
advanced as well as powerful SQL search options
- various display & export options

We realize that there are similar initiatives in the workings,
but we felt the need to develop a custom solution that would
really fit our own needs.
