This patch fixes the build on FreeBSD, which has mkdir() and doesn't have O_LARGEFILE

fix some compatibility issues with newer autotools

Attached patch fixes some compatibility issues with newer autotools.

Additionally it uses LIBS instead of LDFLAGS to add libraries to the linker command.

You are absolutely right.

I'm in the middle of a complex code rewrite that slightly disturbed the current code base. I'll add the missing fclose calls as soon as I'm done with the current changes.
