Hi Joseph,

I can't reproduce this with beta4. The original problem that I've fixed
occured only on the first run of beta3, or if you deleted the SQuirreL
preferences file and then ran SQuirreL, not all the time. It looks like
you've found a different problem.

What operating system/version and Java VM/version are you running? Does it
occur with any alias or just one with a particular JDBC driver?

The operating system is Red Hat Linux, and the JVM is the Sun Java SDK, 
version 1.4.2_02.

The only plugin installed is the syntax plugin, and the error occurrs 
with both the Oracle driver and the TDS SQL server driver.

Might be a problem with 1.4.2_02, I don't have that installed yet. Do you
have an older version of Java installed (1.4.1 or the original 1.4.2) that
you could try it with? In any case I'll be downloading Suns 1.4.2_02 as soon
as I can (if my 56K modem is willing) so I can try it on my Debian box.

I think there are problems with 1.4.2_02 -- at least on Windows (XP 
Pro).  I recently 'upgraded', and found that SQuirreL would hang at 
least once or twice a day.  I installed 1.4.1_05 a few days ago and 
haven't had it hang yet.

Actually, this happens to me with java versions 1.4.2_02, 1.4.1_05, and 
1.3.1_04.

Any other ideas about what might be causing my troubles?

Its a stupid question but do you have write access to your home directory?

Could you do a File/Application Dump and mail me the dump file as well as the
Squirrel log file ( ~/.squirrel-sql/logs/squirrel-sql.log ). Just check the dump
file for passwords before you mail it off.

[Squirrel-sql-develop] NullPointerExceptions and squirrel syntax plugin

Here's some more information regarding my problem with the syntax 
highlighting plugin and squirrel.

The prefs.xml file I have has an empty <fontInfo> element under 
SessionProperties.

'new' squirrel user (one without a prefs.xml file present), my problem

I've looked at the source, and see that a new SessionProperties object 
gets a default (non-null) FontInfo object created for it.  I believe my 
having an empty <fontInfo/> tag in my prefs.xml cause the XMLBeanReader 
to assign assign call sessionProperties.setFontInfo(null).

I'm not sure how to best adjust the code to deal with the problem, but I 
believe you can re-produce my problem by editing your prefs.xml and 
change the <fontInfo> section into an empty tag :

   <fontInfo/>

I tried to replicate this with SQurreL 1.2 beta 4 and Syntax plugin 
0.11. After altering my prefs.xml to have an empty fontInfo-tag I get 
the same NPE as Joseph when I try to connect.

This is driving me crazy. I've downloaded SQuirreL 1.2beta4 and Syntax
0.11 and installed them into a new directory, no other plugins. I've
opened prefs.xml and removed all the data inside the fontInfo tags
leaving

<fontInfo Class="net.sourceforge.squirrel_sql.fw.gui.FontInfo">
</fontInfo>

Started SQuirreL. opened up a session to a MySQL database and can quite
happily run SQL, no NPE.

Try deleting the prefs.xml file and see if that fixes it.

Actually the tag left in prefs.xml should be

<fontInfo/>

if you want to reproduce this bug.

This has been fixed in CVS. The syntax plugin currently won't compile
with the CVS version of SQuirreL. I'll be fixing that once I've finished
my refactoring.

I 'solved' it by using the 1.4.1 SDK that I had installed.  I haven't 
really looked into it since then -- Maybe in the new year.

On a slightly different note, is anyone else getting annoyed with the 
'Row Count' tab?  I always seem to accidently select (yes, it's because 
I'm clumsy, but it is still annoying) that tab when I've the table I've 
selected has umpteen million rows.

I have some time off over Christmas, so I think I will be submitting a 
patch that either: changes the order of the tabs, moving the 'Row Count' 
tab to the end, or adding a global preference to 'turn off' that tab.

How about a patch for a global preference that turns the tab off but
also then puts a button on the Row Count tab called something like
"Refresh Row Count"? So that if you really want the row count you can
get it but you won't be annoyed if you accidentally select the tab.
