trn fails on OpenBSD 64 bits arches

FIONREAD uses an int pointer on OpenBSD. I don't know
how it works on other architectures.

On 32 bits architectures, trn works by chance. On some 64
bits architectures, like sparc64, the FIONREAD in term.c will
NOT get the correct result. Thus eattypeahead ends in a loop.

Fix: I hardcoded FIONREAD to read int on the port. If some
OSes actually use long for their result, then I see no choice
but to include this in the hints file...

Article numbers got huge

A week or two ago, trn (version 4.0 test 76) article
numbers went crazy.

My initial newsgroup selector looks like this:

The top 5 newsgroups have these huge numbers, but all
other newsgroups work perfectly, as before.

So I put some "decoy" newsgroups, which I never read,
at the top of my .newsrc, which now looks like this:

Does anyone know what's happened here, and how to
fix it? I rebuilt trn (on FreeBSD) from source but it didn't
help.

CVS compile problem

The value of datasrc is Null

hang after failed nntp auth

try to connect to an nntp server but fail. Trn will
display an error message and "Type space to continue".
However, typing space, or anything else, has no effect
and you're forced to kill trn.

Debugging shows that trn is looping in getcmd(), but
I don't know what kind of command it's looking for.

Trn version: 4.0-test76 (Apr 2, 2001).
Configured for both NNTP and local news access.

PROBLEM:
Something stomped the ap handed to get_cached_line().
FWIW, the .newsrc in use at the time of the failure is
fairly large and some newsgroups in that file are on
some very long lines describing which articles have
been read. I'm not sure if this is relevant info
but seemed possibly worth mentioning. The newsgroup
that had just been entered at the time of the failure
does not have a particularly long .newsrc line but
was visited soon after visiting some groups with
some very long lines, like this:

needs interactive auth

when connecting to my nntp service, the service
will return a 480 error code (auth required). From
browsing the source, it seems to me that trn tries
to respond based on information found in .nntpauth.
This is problematic for three reasons:

1) Format of .nntpauth is not documented and is not
obvious (i.e. I couldn't get it to work.)

2) User may be using trn with more than one server, in
which case a single .nntpauth file will not work.

3) Users don't like to leave their passwords lying
around in plaintext.

I think it would be far better for trn to query
the user interactively for username and password.
Maybe trn could offer to remember these values, but
the user should always be asked.

NOV being ignored

trn-test76 appears to ignore overview and instead
suck down all articles in order to get access to the
References headers for threading purposes. This can
be very hard on an NNRP server that only has just
enough I/O for its usual workload. trn-test74 does not
display this bug.

I suspect something is off with my news server, but still this should not core dump.
