Hello,
today I installed usermin, which seems to be an awesome tool.

I realized that when I compose a new email, the "From" address shown on the compositor is different from the users real address (screenshot attached).

In this case, the user is assigned to the domain naxosrentacar.gr (which is also the domain from which I access the Usermin), but the shown domain is my server's default domain (vmi293462.contaboserver.net).

I've also checked the /etc/postfix/virtual file and the email address is right for this user.

Thank you!

Are you also using Virtualmin there, or just Usermin directly?

Also, can you post the entry from /etc/postfix/virtual for this user?

  • Malandrakis Angelos

Yeah, I am also using Virtualmin and I've installed Usermin as a Virtualmin module.

The entry for this specific user is:

    info@naxosrentacar.gr info.naxosrentacar

That looks OK. Can you post the output from the command grep from_map /etc/usermin/mailbox/config ?

  • Malandrakis Angelos

    Sure, it returns:

    from_map=/etc/mail/virtusertable

I don't know if that's relevant, but there is no such a file (/etc/mail/virtusertable) on my server.

Do this user perhaps have a custom From: address set in the mailbox address book?

  • Malandrakis Angelos

No, mailbox address book doesn't have any entries at all.

I opened this ticket as this problem seemed like a bug to me. However, if you believe that this is not a generic issue and it's a very specific thing on my server, I guess I should check this on my own, as it has to do with my server's settings.

It does look like a bug, but I'm having trouble figuring out what in Usermin is triggered it.

What username did you login as when sending email?

  • Malandrakis Angelos

I apologize for my late response.
I use the one that is next to this email in the postfix virtual users file (/etc/postfix/virtual).

In this case it is the username "info.naxosrentacar" (created by the virtualmin)

Are you composing a new email, editing an old draft, or replying to an email?

  • Malandrakis Angelos

Actually it happens in all of these three cases.
Whether I compose a new mail, reply or edit an old one, it always has the same address.

I forgot to ask - which version of usermin are you running there?

  • Malandrakis Angelos

It's the latest version 1.823. I originally installed this just a few weeks ago

Does this happen for all users, or just this info user?

  • Malandrakis Angelos

Yes, it happens with all the users created through virtualmin

Also, what does the from_format= line in /etc/usermin/mailbox/config contain?

  • Malandrakis Angelos

    It is from_format=1

    Ok, that also looks fine.

In the UI, is the from address field a text box, or a drop-down menu?

  • Malandrakis Angelos

It's a text box. Here is an image on how it seems (link)

How did you exactly install Virtualmin and Usermin, on the server where you're seeing this issue?

  • Malandrakis Angelos

Although it's been a long time since I installed virtualmin, I believe I installed it using the virtualmin install script. Regarding usermin, I installed it as a webmin module.

Also, I don't know if it matters or not, but my server runs Ubuntu 18.04
