Hi everyone, I’m currently using ZBar to scan QR codes through a live camera feed, but I’m running into an issue where detection is very inconsistent. Sometimes it works perfectly, but other times it fails to recognize the code even when it’s clearly visible and in focus.

I’ve tried adjusting the lighting and camera resolution, but the results are still unpredictable. I’m wondering if this could be related to image preprocessing, frame rate, or specific configuration settings within ZBar.

Has anyone experienced something similar or found a reliable way to improve detection accuracy? Any tips or recommended settings would be really helpful.

Why it freezes
libzbar uses C assert()
On Windows an assert blocks forever. Javadisabled. CompileDNDEBUG. Safe waits → looks frozen
Proper fixes
Best: Rebuild ZBar with asserts disabled
Compile with: -DNDEBUG
Safe workaround: Run zbarimg in a separate process and kill it on timeout (Java won’t freeze).freezes: libzbar. ,
Alternative: Switch to ZXing (no native asserts).
Don’t rely on
Hex-patching DLLs (works, but unsafe).
