Son of Grid Engine is a community continuation of the old Sun Grid Engine project. It aims to be a big superset of available free gridengine code and patches. Sunwait calculates sunrise or sunset times with civil, nautical, astronomical and custom twilights. It is intended for use in home automation with Windows Task Scheduler or cron. Use it to turn lights on *before* it gets dark! The program can wait from invocation until the event specified on the command line occurs or it can return immediately indicating if it is day or night. It's best to schedule Sunwait to run a little before the earliest opportunity for the event to occur each year - ie dusk range is 3:30pm to 10:30pm here, so it reasonable to schedule a dusk task at 3pm and allow Sunwait to pause the task for between 30mins and 7 and a half hours. If you scheduled the task for 6pm, then your lights will come on no earlier than 6pm. The sun's position is calculated using time, and position - latitude and longitude should be specified on the command line. This project is a fork from the work by Dan Risacher. The code also runs on Linux: download all files and run 'make'

From the early 1970s up to nowadays the system date routines of computers usually mix up date with time calculations. Not only that they will expire sooner or later due to number overflow. Not only that this will make calendarian calculations extremely complicated. Fact is, that this will combine two things together which don't have anything to do with each other: The rotation of the earth around itself and the rotation of the earth around the sun, which in addition will both vary during the chiliads. So how will you be able to do date calculations if you then even try to consider time gimmicks like summer/winter time changes, leap-seconds and so on? Just forget it! This project gives you very short pure date routines that are the fastest ones that you can get, because they don't need any looping for doing their calculations, and they do their calculations from 1/1/0 up to 12/31/9999. Of course they precisely consider the transition from Julian to Gregorian calendar. ;-)

This is a simple Java application that will run on Unix/Linux operating systems as a daemon using the Apache Commons Daemon.
