I'm pretty sure I was running jdk1.4.2 as well as jdk1.3.1. 

I ended up using the squirrel 1.1. This is working fine for me.

Some JDK1.4 code made it out in beta6, its supposed to be JDK1.3
compliant. This will be fixed in beta7. However it should have worked
with 1.4.2, are you sure you were running under 1.4.2?
