Yes, eventually there needs to be some restructuring of Visual to be able to
take advantage of the increasing capabilities of graphics cards. (Right now
for technical reasons Visual basically only asks for triangles to be drawn.)
Whether transparency is one of the things the cards can give us "for free" I
do not know.
