Volume Step Adjuster allows you to adjust the increment/decrement step of your system volume when you use your multimedia keys. By default, this step is 2% or 4%, which may be not appropriate for high-precision setting. With Volume Step Adjuster you can set this volume step to any valid value, for example, you can set the volume step to 1% or even 0.1%. The real volume step resolution available depends on your device.
Note, however, that this tool only configures increment/decrement step. It does not adjusts increment/decrement speed or any other parameters.
This program will only run on Windows 7 and, probably, later versions. This app may work incorrectly or may not work at all, if you're running any programs which intercept volume control multimedia keys input.

Splendid. In fact, I did not come about the volume tooltip, but the tooltips for the keyboard status change icons (capslock on, capslock off ...) They went behind the windows, I could only see them after reducing all windows. And I was somewhat reluctant to restart Windows. And Volume Step Adjuster also solved this, without speaking about it. I did not find OSD in the active tasks, to stop it and restart it, but no need of that with Volume Step Adjuster. And ... Right that to change the volume in an application, I do not need to display the name and picture of the last media opened in another one the day before. OK now I need to display the mixer to know the volume when adjusting it, well it will do it. Note that the tooltip remains active if you adjust the volume from the touchpad.

I finally created my account on sourceforge because needed to give this project a 5 star. This is just what I needed, and extremely simple! As darkstarrfoff said, you can use Volume2 to have the OSD back.

Awesome tool, works amazing. It does disable the OSD in Windows 8.1 but for me that was not a deal breaker at all and in fact I am glad it kills the useless OSD that shows up ONLY in the top left. I use Volume2 to give a proper OSD that can be skinned and moved to any part of the screen.

Seems to do the job in Windows 8.1, but it disables the volume OSD, which is a deal-breaker. I need to visually see the volume level, particularly at low levels.
