OpenChat for Linux is a desktop client for ChatGPT / OpenAI Chat designed specifically for Linux. It’s built with Tauri (Rust) for low resource usage and stability, and it uses a “message window” approach (keeps a small active slice of the conversation and loads more as you scroll) so long chats don’t bog down or crash the app.
Downloads are available in common Linux formats (AppImage, Debian package, tarball), with additional packaging manifests for Flatpak, Snap, RPM, AUR, and Nix.
Features
- Native Linux desktop client (AppImage / .deb builds)
- OpenAI Chat / ChatGPT focused (no multi-provider clutter)
- Long-chat performance mode: keeps chats responsive by virtualizing message history
- Automatic message trimming: retains a working window (example: ~40 messages) and loads more as you scroll
- Infinite-scroll chat history: older messages re-load smoothly as you scroll back
- Low memory footprint (designed to stay lightweight even in long conversations)
- Fast startup + responsive UI
- Desktop integration Launcher entry + windowed app behavior Standard desktop shortcuts
- Multi-chat workflow: keep separate conversations organized without the browser overhead
- Stable session experience: avoids browser tab crashes / slowdowns on huge threads
- Clean, minimal UI: looks like ChatGPT, but tuned for desktop use
- Local-first packaging: no cloud services required for the app itself
- Update-friendly releases: versioned builds + checksums (SHA256)
